Ken Flach: Legendary Doubles Champion and Tennis Coach
Early Life and Collegiate CareerKen Flach, an American professional tennis player and coach, was born in 1963. He attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he met his future doubles partner, Robert Seguso. In 1983, Flach was selected as an All-American in both singles and doubles. He also won the NCAA Division II singles championship twice.
Professional Tennis Career
Upon graduating college, Flach and Seguso turned professional and achieved remarkable success in doubles. They won 27 titles on the Grand Prix, WCT, and ATP Tours. From 1985, they regularly represented the United States in the Davis Cup, posting a record of 10-2. Their greatest accomplishment was reaching the 1991 Davis Cup final.
Grand Slam Success and Olympic Triumph
Flach's most notable achievements with Seguso included:- Winning the 1985 WCT Finals and US Open
- Consecutive Wimbledon titles in 1987 and 1988
- Securing the first Olympic tennis gold medal in 70 years at the 1988 Seoul Olympics
Team Success and Mixed Doubles Championships
Beyond their Grand Slam success, Flach and Seguso also excelled in team events. They reached the finals of the World Team Cup in 1985 and 1988, finally claiming victory in 1990. Additionally, Flach won two Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles with Kathy Jordan (French Open and Wimbledon, 1986).
Partnership with Todd Witsken and Rick Leach
After parting ways with Seguso, Flach partnered with Todd Witsken in 1992, winning one Masters Series title. In 1993, he joined forces with Rick Leach and captured his fourth Grand Slam doubles title at the US Open.
Later Career and Coaching
Flach played with various partners in the following years, including Anders Järryd, Jan Apell, David Wheaton, Andrei Olhovskiy, Mark Knowles, and his younger brother Doug. His last major success was reaching the final of the ATP event in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 1996.
Singles Career
In addition to his doubles success, Flach also competed in singles, winning over 150 matches between 1982 and 1995. His best results included reaching the Round of 16 at the 1987 US Open and the semifinals in Las Vegas in 1985.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Flach pursued a coaching career. He coached the Vanderbilt University team from 1997 and worked with the United States Tennis Association. In 2005, he joined the Naples Tennis club as a private coach.
