Biography of Joe Gibbs

Joe Gibbs, born as Joe Jackson Gibbs, is a former American football coach and the owner of a NASCAR racing team. He gained fame primarily as the coach of the Washington Redskins, leading the team to three Super Bowl victories.

Early Life and Career

Joe Gibbs was born in Mocksville, North Carolina. He was a talented athlete in high school and continued his sports career in college and at San Diego State University. While studying under Don Coryell, Gibbs developed his coaching skills. He also worked as an offensive line coach for a local team from 1964 to 1966, while pursuing his master's degree. Gibbs went on to work at various universities, including Florida State University, University of Southern California, and University of Arkansas.

Coaching Career in NFL

Gibbs then moved on to the National Football League (NFL), where he was hired by the St. Louis Cardinals. His appointment was influenced by his mentor, Don Coryell. Gibbs worked as an assistant coach for various teams for a total of 17 years. In 1981, he became the head coach of the Washington Redskins. Initially, his tenure with the team did not start well, with the Redskins losing their first five games. However, Gibbs was able to turn the season around, finishing with a record of 8-8.

In 1982, the Redskins won the NFC championship and went on to win the Super Bowl. They continued their success in 1983 by winning the NFC championship again. Although they were defeated in the Super Bowl in 1984, the team was still considered one of the best in the league. The Redskins won their second Super Bowl under Gibbs' leadership in 1987, and their third in 1991.

Gibbs retired from coaching in 1993, citing health reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family. He then focused on his NASCAR racing team, which he had founded in 1992, and briefly participated in NHRA racing. In 2004, Gibbs made a surprising return to coaching and rejoined the Washington Redskins.

Later Career

Gibbs faced some challenges in his later coaching years with the Redskins. Although the team made it to the playoffs in 2005 and 2007, they were unable to advance far. Gibbs ultimately stepped down as head coach in 2008 but remained a consultant for the team. Jim Zorn took over as head coach.

Currently, Gibbs resides in Virginia with his wife. During the NASCAR season, the family moves to Charlotte, North Carolina. They have two sons and eight grandchildren. One of Gibbs' grandsons battled leukemia in 2007, undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.
