A Prostate Cancer Journey

Diagnosis and Surgery

American Ken Priest, a prostate cancer survivor, diligently monitored his health for warning signs. Despite his vigilance, the cancer initially remained undetected. However, after an elevation in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Surgery was recommended and performed robotically, but it was later discovered that the cancer had spread beyond the prostate.

Exploring Treatment Options

Undeterred, Priest sought alternative treatment options. He came across Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and scheduled a consultation. After thorough evaluations, radiation therapy with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) was proposed.

Choosing CTCA

The decision to undergo IMRT at CTCA proved challenging due to its time commitment of eight weeks, which would prevent Priest from working and caring for his family over the holidays. Despite these concerns, he was impressed by CTCA's patient-centered approach, where decisions were made jointly between experts and the patient. Additionally, CTCA offered a comprehensive range of services, including nutritionists, naturopaths, and spiritual counselors.

A Comfortable Treatment Journey

During the eight-week treatment, Priest experienced minimal discomfort. The center's staff ensured his well-being through engaging activities and holiday celebrations, keeping his spirits and motivation high. For more complex issues, experienced specialists were readily available to address side effects.

A "Radiation Vacation"

Priest's son humorously referred to his treatment as a "radiation vacation." While the humor was evident, there was truth to the statement. Priest's experience was surprisingly comfortable thanks to the center's proactive approach to logistics, even arranging a weekend visit with his daughter's family.

Patient Engagement and Support

Without a caregiver present, Priest made informed decisions based on the medical information provided by CTCA staff. His wife monitored his progress remotely through a dedicated website, ensuring her peace of mind.

Recovery and Future Outlook

Currently undergoing hormonal therapy, Priest feels optimistic. He is committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and utilizing the resources provided by CTCA. He actively participates in the CTCA Cancer Fighters Care Net and the Patient Advisory Council, sharing his experiences and offering inspiration to fellow cancer survivors.

Priest recently celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary and embarked on a post-treatment vacation with his wife. They joyfully welcomed their second grandchild. At 67, Priest anticipates returning to his local volunteer ambulance service, continuing to make a difference in his community.
