Biography of Kenji Doihara

Kenji Doihara was a Japanese general and spy, known for his involvement in various military activities during the early 20th century. He was born on August 8, 1883, in Okayama, Japan.

Early Career

Doihara graduated from the military academy in 1904 and served in different regiments. In 1912, he completed his studies at the Staff College and was subsequently appointed as a military attaché in Beijing.

Intelligence Operations in Siberia and China

In the 1920s, Doihara took charge of the Japanese army's intelligence service in Eastern Siberia and Northern China. He held positions in various infantry regiments and divisions, including the 2nd Infantry Regiment, the 3rd Infantry Regiment, and the 1st Division.

During this time, Doihara served as a military advisor to Marshal Zhang Zuolin and was involved in organizing his assassination. In 1931, he orchestrated the Manchurian Incident, which provided a pretext for the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. He became the governor of the occupied city of Mukden and facilitated the arrival of the last Chinese emperor, Puyi, who became the regent and later the emperor of Manchukuo.

Later Military Career

From 1931 to 1932, Doihara served as a referent-adjutant to General Nisio Tosidzo, the chief Japanese military advisor to Puyi. He commanded the 9th Brigade from 1932 to 1933 and then became the chief of the military intelligence mission in Mukden until May 1934.

Doihara's career continued to advance, and he became the chief of staff of the Chinese Garrison Army in 1934. He commanded the 14th Infantry Division in China from 1937 to 1939, participating in battles around Lake Khasan and the Khalkhin Gol River.

World War II and Trial

From August 1939 to November 1941, Doihara commanded the 5th Army stationed in Manchuria. He held various high-ranking positions, including membership in the Supreme War Council and the chief of the Military Academy.

In May 1943, he was appointed as the commander of the Eastern Army, with its headquarters in Tokyo. Under Doihara's command, the 7th Front was formed on March 22, 1944, which included the 16th, 25th, and 29th Armies stationed in Singapore, Malaya, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java.

During the final months of the war, Doihara led the 1st General Army, responsible for the defense of the Japanese islands. After Japan's surrender on September 21, 1945, he was arrested by the occupying authorities and became one of the accused at the Tokyo Trials.

Doihara refused to testify during the trial and was sentenced to death. On December 23, 1948, he was executed by hanging at Sugamo Prison.
