Biography of Kenneth McDuff
Kenneth Allen McDuff, an American serial killer, was born in 1946 in Rosebud, Texas. He was one of four children in the McDuff family, with his father being a farmer and a Mason, and his mother gaining a reputation for her tough temperament and love for firearms, earning her the nickname "The pistol packin' momma." Later, McDuff's mother was described as excessively controlling and authoritarian in Christopher Berry-Dee's biography of Kenneth.
From a young age, McDuff acquired a fearsome reputation, often getting into fights with boys much older than himself, and his future did not promise to be trouble-free. In 1964, he was convicted of burglary and theft, but despite a harsh sentence, he was released in 1965. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he violated the terms of his parole and was sent back to prison. In August 1966, McDuff and his new accomplice, Roy Dale Green, killed McDuff's father, John McDuff, and spent a whole day burying his body in concrete. Afterward, the duo had some beer and hamburgers and, by 10 pm, they were at a basketball court in Everman, Texas, where they encountered their next victims - three young individuals: 18-year-old Robert Brand, his girlfriend, 16-year-old Edna Louise Sullivan, and 16-year-old Mark Dunman, Brand's cousin.
Without delving into the details of the victims' final hours, it can be said that their deaths were exceptionally brutal. The poor girl, Edna Louise Sullivan, was also raped before being killed. Meanwhile, McDuff and Green hid the weapons, disposed of the bodies, and cleaned the car, which contained significant evidence of the horrific murders.
McDuff eventually received three death sentences, while Green was sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, McDuff never saw the execution of his sentence. He was twice nearly executed but, due to the overcrowding of Texas prisons, the execution was postponed. As a result, McDuff was released on October 11, 1989. He found a job at a gas station for $4 an hour and even enrolled at Texas State Technical College in Waco. However, just three days after his release, he killed again. This time, his victim was 31-year-old Sarafia Parker, whose body was discovered 48 miles from Waco on October 14.
Soon after, McDuff was sent back to prison for making death threats but was released again in December 1990. Later, his victims would include two prostitutes - Brenda Thompson and 17-year-old Regenia DeAnne Moore - whose bodies were found much later. In December 1991, he kidnapped and killed Colleen Reed in front of several witnesses.
In total, McDuff was suspected of killing 14 people, including 22-year-old Melissa Northrup and Valencia Joshua. He later moved to Kansas City, where he worked as a garbage collector and lived under the name Richard Fowler. However, one of his colleagues, Gary Smithee, recognized McDuff as the wanted criminal after seeing his photo on the national program "America's Most Wanted."
Smithee contacted the police after discussing the situation with another coworker. Following a search of McDuff's home and fingerprinting, he was identified as the killer. Despite numerous appeals, McDuff was unable to escape punishment this time and was sentenced to death.
On November 17, 1998, his sentence was carried out, and McDuff was executed.
