Biography of Stanislaw Modzelewski
Stanislaw Modzelewski was a Polish serial killer, known as the legendary "Vampire of Galkowek". He was active in Lodz, Poland, in the 1950s. Little is known about Modzelewski's early life. He only completed three years of school and worked as a driver to make a living. Modzelewski worked in Warsaw during this time.
Crimes and Victims
Between 1952 and 1956, as well as in 1967, Modzelewski killed seven women and attempted to murder six others. He was also attributed to another victim, the eighth one, but her body was never found. Modzelewski targeted women aged 18 to 87 years old, strangling them with a scarf or his bare hands. He took valuable possessions as well as seemingly useless items from his victims.
Modzelewski's actions were characterized by extreme cruelty, with a clear sexual undertone. He would undress his victims below the waist and, in some cases, attempted to rape them. It remains unclear whether these acts occurred before or after their deaths.
Police Investigation and Capture
Modzelewski's first known murder took place in July 1952 when he killed a 67-year-old woman named Jozefa Pietrzykowska in the forest near Galkowek. In December of the same year, he killed 32-year-old Maria Kunka, followed by the strangulation of 21-year-old Teresa Piekarska just four months later.
After a brief hiatus, Modzelewski committed his next murder in January 1955. In March 1956, he killed 18-year-old Helena Walos using a scarf. In August 1956, he claimed his sixth victim, 22-year-old Helena Klata. Following this murder, Modzelewski went silent for 11 years.
An intensive police investigation into the serial killings came to a halt in 1957. Despite their efforts, the authorities were unable to apprehend the killer. At one point, railroad workers were suspected as the crimes occurred near the railway, and some survivors remembered being attacked by a man in uniform. However, the search led to no conclusive results.
Ten years later, a new case emerged when Maria Galecka was murdered in Warsaw. This time, the police quickly located the killer, former neighbor Stanislaw Modzelewski. He was sentenced to death by hanging and executed on November 13, 1969.
