Sha'Carri Richardson: American Sprinter and World Champion

Sha'Carri Richardson is an American track and field sprinter who has achieved significant success in her short career. She competes in the 60, 100, and 200-meter sprints.

Early Career and College Years

Richardson began her career at Texas A&M University in 2018. She made her international debut at the 2017 Pan American Under-20 Athletics Championships, where she won a gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay. In 2019, she transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU). At the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she set two world junior records in the 100m and 200m races.

Professional Career

In 2021, Richardson qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with a time of 10.86 seconds in the 100m, beating second-place finisher Javian Oliver by 0.13 seconds. However, her participation in the Games was jeopardized after her urine sample tested positive for marijuana metabolites. Despite her explanation that she used cannabis to cope with the pressure of the Olympic trials and the death of her biological mother, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspended her for one month, effectively barring her from the Olympics.

After her suspension, Richardson made her return at the 2021 Prefontaine Classic, finishing ninth in the 100m. In 2023, she began to regain her form, setting a personal best of 10.57 seconds in April and winning her first Diamond League 100m event in Doha with a time of 10.76 seconds.

World Championships and Beyond

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Richardson won the gold medal in the women's 100m sprint with a time of 10.65 seconds. She also finished third in the 200m and won gold in the women's 4×100m relay. The following year, she successfully defended her U.S. national title in the 100m but did not qualify for the 200m at the Olympic Trials. At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, she won the silver medal in the 100m.

Personal Life

Richardson is known for her flamboyant style, including long nails and colorful hair. She cites Florence Griffith Joyner as her inspiration. She identifies as bisexual and has been open about her struggles with mental health.
