Kerry Scott Conran, an American filmmaker, was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1964. His passion for cinema emerged early on, leading him to experiment with filmmaking using an 8mm video camera. Despite initially enrolling in the University of Michigan to study English, Conran soon realized his true calling and transferred to the California Institute of Arts, where he ultimately pursued animation.

Animation Career and Technological Advancements

Following his graduation, Conran worked as an animator, designing company logos and websites. He developed innovative technologies that enabled him to create an impressive six-minute short film depicting robots roaming the streets of New York City. This short film left an unforgettable impression on producers.

Debut Feature Film: "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"

Conran's groundbreaking work earned him a substantial offer to direct a $60 million live-action project. However, he initially hesitated before accepting the opportunity. After successfully convincing producer Jon Avnet of his vision, filming commenced on March 14, 2003, and wrapped up on April 8, 2003.

To expedite the lengthy editing process, Conran pre-shot numerous shots against a blue screen. This allowed him to manipulate the footage swiftly, eliminating the need for multiple takes of key scenes. The film, starring Jude Law and Angelina Jolie, premiered on July 22, 2004, in San Diego.

Synopsis and Production Trivia

"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" unfolds in 1939 and follows investigative journalist Polly Perkins as she investigates the mysterious disappearance of renowned scientists. Teaming up with ace pilot Joe Sullivan, known as Sky Captain, they pursue the sinister Dr. Totenkopf, who plans to unleash giant robots upon the world. Interestingly, Angelina Jolie's involvement in the film lasted only three days.

Despite the film's New York setting, Conran, a Michigan native, had never visited the city. He relied on photographs, postcards, and films to meticulously recreate the urban environment. Even during pre-production, he never made a trip to New York.

Recognition and Awards

"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" received two awards: the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award and the Saturn Award for Best Costumes. Notably, the film garnered over a dozen nominations for prestigious film awards.
