Biography of Kerryn McCann

Kerryn McCann was born on May 2, 1967, and passed away on December 8, 2008. She was a professional Australian long-distance runner specializing in marathon races. McCann was born in Bulli, New South Wales, Australia and developed an interest in athletics during her early school years. In 1979, she won the junior cross-country championship in the country, showcasing her talent at a young age. However, McCann took a break from sports after this victory and only resumed professional running at the age of 17.

At the age of 19, she achieved third place in the Australian marathon championship, and in 1988, she won her first significant marathon race. McCann went on to become the champion of Australia in cross-country running in 1992 and 1999, and she also won the Australian championship in the 10,000 meters race in 2002.

In 1994, McCann participated in the Commonwealth Games, finishing 10th in the marathon event. She also competed in the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where she placed 28th. In 1999, McCann briefly paused her athletic career due to family commitments and the upcoming birth of her child.

In 2000, McCann represented Australia in the Sydney Olympics, finishing in 11th place in the marathon. During the same year, she achieved 5th place in the London Marathon, setting an Australian record with a time of 2:25:59.

In 1991, Kerryn McCann married professional surfer Greg McCann, who won the Australian championship title in 1983. They welcomed their first child, son Brandon, in 1999, followed by the birth of their daughter Josie in 2003. In August 2007, Kerryn announced her third pregnancy, but during this time, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After giving birth prematurely, she was also diagnosed with liver cancer.

Kerryn McCann passed away on December 8, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She left a lasting legacy in Australian athletics, known for her achievements in long-distance running and her resilience in the face of adversity.
