Kerstin Gier: A German Literary Force
Early Life and EducationKerstin Gier was born in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. Her academic pursuits began with German and English literature and musicology, but she later switched to business and communication psychology, graduating as a certified teacher.
Literary Beginnings and Recognition
In 1995, faced with unemployment, Gier turned to writing women's literature. Her novel "Männer und andere Katastrophen" (Men and Other Disasters) achieved instant success and was adapted into a film starring Heike Makatsch.
Moving on to more advanced genres, Gier's "Ein unmoralisches Sonderangebot" (An Immoral Offer) won the DeLiA Literary Award for Best German Love Novel in 2005.
The "Timeless" Series and International Acclaim
Gier's passion for fantasy led her to create the "Timeless" trilogy in 2009. The first book, "Die Rubinrote Zeitreise" (The Ruby Red Time Traveler), was translated into English by Anthea Bell. The trilogy's success and the 2014 German film adaptation of its second installment further propelled Gier's international fame.
Beyond Women's Fiction
Gier has also written several bestsellers in the fantasy genre. Her novel "Jeremy und der Drache aus Jambalaya" (Jeremy and the Dragon from Jambalaya) pays homage to J.R.R. Tolkien's "Farmer Giles of Ham" and features a mischievous dragon named Brunophilax.
Personal Life and Influences
Kerstin Gier lives near Bergisch Gladbach with her husband, son, cats, hens, and a multitude of goldfish. Her writing is inspired by her love for fantasy, which began in childhood. Gior often illustrated her own early works of fiction.
