Kęstutis: Grand Duke of Lithuania

Kęstutis, a Lithuanian hero, was born around 1297 into the Gediminid dynasty. As the son of Grand Duke Gediminas, he received an inheritance in the western regions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Defender of Western Lithuania

Kęstutis ruled his territory effectively and actively participated in military campaigns alongside his brothers. During his reign, he faced the threat of the Teutonic Order from Prussia. Kęstutis played a crucial role in defending western Lithuania from their invasions.

Co-ruler with Algirdas

Kęstutis became a virtual co-ruler with his brother Algirdas. Together, they led Lithuania with harmony and focused on defending its borders. Upon Algirdas' death, Kęstutis recognized his son, Jogaila, as Grand Duke.

Betrayal and Demise

Despite Kęstutis' popularity among the Lithuanians, Jogaila plotted to eliminate him. He sought an alliance with the Teutonic Order, Kęstutis' sworn enemy. Kęstutis was captured and imprisoned in Kreva Castle. On August 15, 1382, he was ordered to be strangled.
