Early Life and Amateur Career
Kevin Burnett emerged as a professional boxer in the United States, making his ring debut on November 27, 2004. Despite his impressive speed for his size and potent right-hand punch, Burnett faced setbacks early in his career. An enduring shoulder injury from his amateur days hindered his performance, and the lack of a competent trainer hampered his preparation.
Professional Debut and Early Struggles
Burnett managed to eke out victories in his first two professional bouts but struggled with excessive weight, tipping the scales at 130 kg. His drawbacks became apparent in subsequent fights, particularly his slow handwork and glaring technical deficiencies. In 2006, he drew with Anthony Otto and suffered a first-round knockout defeat to Willie Walker, seemingly ending his prospects.
Improvement under Pat Burns
Burnett's fortunes turned when he began training under Pat Burns, the former coach of middleweight champion Jermaine Taylor. Burns honed Burnett's physique and enhanced his technical abilities, allowing him to move better, punch harder, and improve his right-hand accuracy. In 2007, Burnett notched five consecutive victories, including impressive performances against Steve Lavelleen and Willie Perryman.
Rising the Ranks
In 2008, Burnett's competition level intensified. He fought three times, including a memorable encounter with Horace Ray Grant, who had 12 wins and only one loss at the time. Burnett controlled the pace early in the bout, landing precise right-hand punches that forced Grant into a third-round knockdown. Although Burnett tired towards the end of the fight, he managed to weather Grant's onslaught and secure a hard-fought victory.
Current Status
As of October 27, 2008, Burnett's next opponent remained undetermined. However, his improved skills and determination suggest that he is poised for further success in the heavyweight division.
