Early Career and Formula One Attempts

American race car driver competed in both Formula One World Championship and CART series. In the late 1970s, he raced in the Formula Atlantic Championship. In 1980 and 1981, he made two attempts to enter the Formula One World Championship during the North American rounds but failed to qualify on both occasions.

Transition to CART

From 1981 onward, he competed in the CART series. In 1982, he achieved a second-place start in the Indianapolis 500 but lost control of his car on the warm-up lap, crashing and taking out Mario Andretti's car in the process.

CART Success and Retirement

He continued racing in CART until 1993. During his tenure, he secured one victory in 1986 and another second-place finish in the Indianapolis 500 that same year. At the conclusion of the 1993 season, he retired from racing.
