Kevin McCarthy: Early Life and Education

Kevin McCarthy was born on February 15, 1914, in Seattle, Washington. His father, Roy Winfield McCarthy, was from an affluent Irish Catholic family in Minnesota. His mother, Martha Therese Preston, was born in Washington. Kevin had a younger sister, the acclaimed writer and critic Mary McCarthy. His extended family included Eugene McCarthy, the American poet, former senator, and presidential candidate.

Kevin attended Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, graduating in 1932. He then enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where he participated in his first play, "Henry IV, Part 1." This experience sparked his passion for acting.

Early Career and Success

Kevin McCarthy's early career was marked by a series of strong character roles. He gained critical acclaim for his performance as Biff Loman in Laszlo Benedek's 1951 adaptation of "Death of a Salesman." This role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor.

One of McCarthy's most iconic roles was in Don Siegel's 1956 science fiction classic, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." He also had memorable performances in television series such as "The Survivors" with Lana Turner and "Flamingo Road," where he played Claude Weldon, the father of Morgan Fairchild.

Guest Appearances and Collaborations

Throughout his career, Kevin McCarthy made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows, including "The Twilight Zone," "The Fugitive," and "The Oregon Trail." He was also one of three actors (along with Dick Miller and Robert Picardo) who frequently collaborated with director Joe Dante. In Dante's 2005 film "Slipstream," McCarthy played a version of himself.

Personal Life

Kevin McCarthy married Augusta Dabney in 1941. They divorced in 1961. He formed a close friendship with actor Montgomery Clift, starting in 1942. The two starred in the play "Mexican Mural" and co-wrote the screenplay for an unproduced film adaptation of the play "You Touched Me!"

On October 24, 2009, Kevin McCarthy was honored at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival for his contributions to the entertainment industry. He passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile and memorable actor who played a wide range of characters with depth and nuance.
