Biography of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Early Life and Education

Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was born in 1948 in the city of Al-Ain in the Buraimi oasis. He received a traditional family upbringing and education. As the eldest son in the family, he served as his father's right-hand man and learned the intricacies of state affairs from him. In his later years, when Sheikh Zayed was ill, Khalifa, along with his half-brothers, played an active role in shaping the policies of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Presidency and Family

Following the passing of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, on November 2 at the age of 86, Sheikh Khalifa became the new President of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE, a federative state, was established 33 years ago and consists of seven emirates. Sheikh Khalifa is the eldest of the 19 sons of the founder and long-serving leader of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

During his father's presidency, Sheikh Khalifa witnessed the multiple marriages and extravagant lifestyle of Sheikh Zayed, who was married nine times and sometimes had four wives simultaneously. Despite this, Sheikh Khalifa is known as an exemplary member of the family, characterized by his modesty, high sense of responsibility, foresight, broad-mindedness, and generosity.

Apart from his political responsibilities, Sheikh Khalifa has a deep passion for history and poetry. He surrounds himself with many literati and other intellectuals. He also inherited his father's love for falconry, a passion that has often led him to visit Turkmenistan.
