# Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche: A Multifaceted Buddhist Figure

Early Life and Recognition

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche was born in Bhutan in 1961. At the tender age of seven, His Holiness Sakya Trizin recognized him as the reincarnation of the great lama Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö.

Education and Lineage

Rinpoche's education began at the royal monastery in Sikkim. As the Khyentse lineage embraces the non-sectarian Rimé movement, Rinpoche studied under over 25 teachers from all major Tibetan Buddhist schools: Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu, and Gelug. He received teachings and empowerments from many renowned lamas, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the 16th Karmapa, and his grandfather, Dudjom Rinpoche. His root guru was Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Rinpoche also pursued academic studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

Preservation and Education

As a young man, Rinpoche played a crucial role in publishing rare texts that would otherwise have been lost. In the 1980s, he embarked on the restoration of Dzongsar Monastery in eastern Tibet. Subsequently, he established several colleges and retreat centers in Bhutan, India, Australia, North America, and the Far East.

Siddhartha's Intent

In 1989, Rinpoche founded Siddhartha's Intent, an international network of Buddhist non-profit centers. Its mission is to preserve Buddhist teachings while fostering awareness and understanding beyond specific traditions and cultures.

Khyentse Foundation

Rinpoche established the Khyentse Foundation in 2001. This non-profit organization provides support and guidance to individuals and organizations engaged in the study and practice of the Buddhist path. Its priorities include monastic education, scholarship funding, publication, educational programs, and faculty positions.

Filmography and Writing

Rinpoche has authored the screenplay and directed two films: "The Cup" (1999) and "Travelers and Magicians" (2003). He is also the author of the book "What Makes You Not a Buddhist" (2007).

Documentary

In 2003, Rinpoche's disciple Leslie Anne Patten released the documentary "Words of My Perfect Teacher," which chronicles Rinpoche's life and his relationships with his students.
