Early Life and Upbringing
Kiba Lumberg was born on May 27, 1956, in Lappeenranta, Finland. Her parents were master handicraftsman Vieno Irene Berg and carpenter Alexander Lumberg. Growing up in a Romani family, Lumberg witnessed firsthand the traditions and practices of her people. However, at the age of 13, she felt compelled to flee her family due to experiences of "fear, violence, and subjugation."
Education and Artistic Beginnings
Determined to pursue her aspirations, Lumberg enrolled in the University of Art and Design (now Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture) in 1983. She studied decorative arts, minoring in the art of business. In 1986, she spent a year studying at the University of Art and Design in Skopje, and in 1988, she attended the Academy of Arts in Florence.
Breakthrough and Controversial Views
Lumberg's first major public exhibition came in 1993 at the 98th Annual Exhibition of Finnish Artists. Since then, her works have been showcased in exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Her art is often inspired by her Romani heritage and explores themes of injustice, societal norms, and gender roles.
In 1997, Lumberg's miniseries "Dark and Glowing Blood," based on her experiences within the Romani community, garnered widespread attention. Her subsequent critique of Romani culture on television in 2007 sparked significant controversy and resulted in death threats.
Advocacy and Politics
Lumberg is known for her outspoken advocacy for the rights of Romani people. In 2008, she successfully sued the president of the European Roma and Travelers Forum for defamation. She has also run for political office as a candidate for the Left Alliance in the 2007 Finnish parliamentary elections and the 2009 European Parliament elections.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2022, Lumberg was awarded the prestigious State Artist's Pension by the Finnish government. Her work has left an indelible mark on Finnish art and culture, earning her both critical acclaim and recognition as a trailblazing figure in her field. Kiba Lumberg continues to be an influential voice speaking out against oppression and advocating for marginalized communities.
