Early Life and Education
Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld was born on September 26, 1788, in Karlsruhe, Germany. He was the son and student of the painter Johann Veit Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In 1804, he enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Vienna, studying under Heinrich Friedrich Füger.
Artistic Influences
Schnorr von Carolsfeld was influenced by the group of students led by Friedrich Overbeck, who sought to move beyond the academic classicism that dominated painting at the time. This group evolved into the Nazarene movement, which emphasized religious and medieval influences. However, Schnorr von Carolsfeld did not fully align himself with the Nazarenes and remained at the Academy.
Artistic Style
Schnorr von Carolsfeld's early work primarily focused on religious subjects. From 1820 onwards, he expanded his repertoire to include landscapes, historical paintings, and portraits, notably of the imperial family. His style was characterized by its romanticism and attention to detail.
Career and Patronage
In 1828, Schnorr von Carolsfeld became a painter for Archduke Johann at his country estate in Brandhof. He also became a teacher of Moritz von Schwind in 1821. In 1834, he traveled to Paris, and in 1837, he embarked on a study trip to Northern Germany. Through Archduke Johann's support, he gained access to the imperial court and received commissions from the imperial family.
Later Years
In 1835, Schnorr von Carolsfeld became a member of the Vienna Academy of Arts. In 1841, he was appointed as the curator of the imperial art gallery at the Belvedere Palace. He continued to produce artwork until his death on November 24, 1853, at the age of 65.
