Early Life and InspirationsBorn Brian Todd Collins on April 1, 1986, in Los Angeles, California, Kid Ink discovered his passion for music as a teenager. During this time, he began experimenting with beatmaking and studied music production extensively. His inspirations included renowned producers Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Swizz Beatz.
Transition to Artistry and Early Career
After producing for several years, Kid Ink decided to transition into becoming an artist at the age of 22. He released his debut mixtape under the alias Rockstar, gaining some local recognition. His talent was noticed by DJ Ill Will, known for his association with the hip-hop website HotNewHipHop. Together, they formed the Alumni Group label, and Kid Ink emerged with his new moniker.
Breakthrough with Mixtapes and Collaborations
Kid Ink released a string of mixtapes, including "Crash Landing" (2011), "Daydreamer" (2011), and "Wheels Up" (2011). These projects featured collaborations with artists such as Roscoe Dash, Ty Dolla Sign, Meek Mill, Cory Gunz, Ray J, and Sean Kingston.
Independent Album and Label Deal
In 2012, Kid Ink released his independent debut album, "Up & Away." The album featured production from Ned Cameron and Jahlil Beats and peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard 200 chart. He signed a deal with RCA Records in 2013, releasing his first single for the label, "Bad Ass," with Wale and Meek Mill.
"Almost Home" and "My Own Lane"
Kid Ink's EP "Almost Home" (2013) debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart, featuring collaborations with Wale, Meek Mill, French Montana, and Rico Love. The following year, he released his sophomore album, "My Own Lane" (2014). The album's lead single, "Show Me" featuring Chris Brown, became a platinum hit. "My Own Lane" was met with critical acclaim, with XXL magazine praising Kid Ink's ability to "re-engineer the genre while staying true to his L.A. hip-hop roots."
"Full Speed" and Beyond
In 2015, Kid Ink released his third studio album, "Full Speed." The album debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured the hit single "Body Language" with Usher and Tinashe. Kid Ink continues to release music and tour, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in contemporary hip-hop.
Tattoos and Personal Style
Kid Ink is known for his extensive collection of tattoos, covering much of his body. His first tattoo was a dragon on his back, and he has since added numerous other designs, including a pirate elephant, portraits of his mother and grandfather, and a roaring tiger across his neck.
