Reign of Kitten-Hutran, King of Elam (ca. 1235-1210 BCE)
As the younger brother of Unpatar-Napirisha, Kitten-Hutran rose to power as the King of Elam from approximately 1235 to 1210 BCE. His full name, "Kitten-Hutran-Untash," translates to "The Magical Charms of Hutran the God Helped Me."
Military Conquests
Unlike some rulers who focused on religious construction and inscriptions, Kitten-Hutran is primarily known for his military campaigns. He appears in only two later king lists, and his exploits are documented in Mesopotamian chronicles, where he is referred to as Kiddin-Hutran.
Clash with Tukulti-Ninurta I of Assyria
Kitten-Hutran's aggression met its match in the capable Assyrian king, Tukulti-Ninurta I. The two clashed on the battlefield multiple times, with Kitten-Hutran seeking control over the Elamite-Babylonian border regions of Der and Ulayash.
Invasion of Mesopotamia
After the death of Kassite king Kashtiliash IV of Babylonia, Kitten-Hutran seized an opportunity and invaded Mesopotamia in 1226 BCE. His forces crossed the Tigris River, capturing and massacring the inhabitants of Nippur. Subsequently, he ravaged Der, destroying the local temple and enslaving its people.
Assyrian Counteroffensive
Tukulti-Ninurta I quickly regained control of Babylonia, appointing Kassite rulers. Undeterred, Kitten-Hutran crossed the Tigris again, capturing Isin and advancing as far as Marad.
The Fall of Kitten-Hutran
The Assyrian king retaliated decisively, leading his army to the "Lower Sea" (Persian Gulf) and threatening Susa from the south. The exact events in Elam after this are unknown, but Kitten-Hutran's sudden disappearance from history coincides with the end of the Igehalcid dynasty. It is speculated that internal conflicts may have played a role in his downfall.
