Biography of Kirill Babitsyn
Kirill Babitsyn, also known by his stage name Kirka, was a Finnish rock and pop singer of Russian descent. He was born into a family of Russian immigrants and had a notable musical background. His older brother Alexander "Sammy" Babitsyn (1948-1973) and sister Maria "Muska" Babitsyn (born 1952) were also prominent figures in the Finnish music scene.
Early Life and Musical Journey
In his childhood, Kirill played the accordion. However, in 1964, he became captivated by rock and roll and formed his first band called The Creatures. In 1967, he began touring Finland as a member of the group The Islanders.
Participation in Eurovision and National Success
In 1984, Kirka represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Hengaillaan" and secured a ninth-place finish. His album "Surun pyyhit silmistäni" released in 1988 sold a record-breaking 209,000 copies in Finland, establishing him as a national sensation. Throughout his career, Kirka released a total of 78 singles and almost 60 albums.
Legacy
Kirka's contribution to Finnish music, particularly in the rock and pop genres, is highly regarded. He not only achieved commercial success but also left a lasting impact on the national music scene.
