Early Life and Medical Studies
Jan Berry was born on April 3, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. Contrary to popular belief, he initially pursued medicine as his primary interest, while music remained a mere hobby.

Formation of Jan & Dean
It was at University High School in Los Angeles that Berry crossed paths with Dean Torrence, his future musical partner. Together, they formed various bands that failed to gain significant traction. However, their fortunes changed when they encountered The Beach Boys and befriended songwriter Brian Wilson.
Success with Surf Music
In 1963, Berry and Torrence released their debut single, "Surf City," which soared to number one on the charts. They subsequently embraced the surf music genre, with their first album becoming an instant bestseller.
Tragic Car Accident
On April 12, 1966, Berry's career took a devastating turn when he was involved in a serious car accident. While driving recklessly, he crashed his Corvette into a parked truck. The impact left him with severe injuries and on the brink of death.
Recovery and Subsequent Decline
Berry underwent a prolonged recovery, eventually relearning how to walk and speak. His singing career was effectively ended by the accident. In the late 1980s, Jan & Dean embarked on brief tours, but Berry's health issues prevented them from sustaining their momentum.
Legacy and Passing
Despite the adversity he faced, Berry's legacy as a rock and roll icon remains intact. He died on March 26, 2004, at the age of 62, from a stroke. His name will forever be synonymous with the golden age of surf music.
