Early Life and Military Service
Kyrylo Budanov was born on January 4, 1986, in Kyiv, Ukraine. He graduated from the Odesa Military Academy in 2007 and joined the Special Forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Conflict in Eastern Ukraine and Incident in Crimea
From 2014 onwards, Budanov participated in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine and sustained battle wounds. According to Russian media, he was involved in an incident near the Crimean city of Armyansk in August 2016.
Assassination Attempt and Special Assignment
On April 4, 2019, an assassination attempt was made against Budanov in Kyiv, resulting in an explosion under his vehicle. Suspects were later detained, and two Russian citizens were sentenced to prison by the Holosiivskyi District Court. From 2018 to 2020, Budanov held a special assignment role.
Appointment as Head of Intelligence
In 2020, Budanov was appointed as Deputy Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. On August 5, 2020, President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed him as the Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Military Ranks and Awards
On August 24, 2021, Budanov was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. On April 3, 2022, he was further promoted to Major General. He is a full recipient of the Order "For Courage" and has received numerous other military decorations.
