Claudio Graziano: A Life of Military Distinction
Early Career and EducationClaudi Graziano embarked on his military journey by attending the Military Academy of Modena from 1972 to 1974. Subsequently, he enrolled in the Turin Practical School, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in military strategic sciences.
Command and Staff Positions
Graziano's first command role was as platoon commander in the Pinerolo "Suza" Alpine Battalion in 1976. He subsequently held various command positions within the Alpine Brigade "Taurinense," including mortar company commander and battalion commander. Additionally, he served as cadet company commander at the Military Alpine School from 1983 to 1986.
Upon completing staff training in 1987, Graziano was assigned to the Army as a staff officer. He attained the rank of major in 1988 and attended the Higher Command School in 1990, after which he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. His post-schooling appointments included head of the secretariat in the Italian Army Chief of Staff's office.
United Nations and Brigade Commands
In 1992, Graziano commanded the "Suza" Alpine Battalion in a UN mission in Mozambique. He later served as head of a branch in the Army Chief of Staff's office. After becoming a colonel in 1996, he commanded the 2nd Alpine Regiment and then returned to the General Staff as head of the Planning Division.
In 2001, Graziano was appointed military attaché at the Italian embassy in Washington, D.C., where he was promoted to brigadier general in 2002. Upon his return to Italy, he assumed command of the Alpine Brigade "Taurinense" in 2004.
In 2006, Graziano became commander of the Multinational Brigade "Kabul" in Afghanistan. He was subsequently appointed as the Force Commander and Head of Mission of UNIFIL in Lebanon in 2007.
Chief of Army Staff and EU Military Committee
On October 14, 2011, Graziano was appointed Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, formally assuming the position on December 6. In 2017, he was nominated as the new Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, assuming the post in November 2018.
Personal Life and Interests
Graziano was an avid ski instructor. He pursued additional training in military sciences at the U.S. Army War College from 1996 to 1997. In Italy, he completed degrees in international and diplomatic sciences from the University of Trieste and social sciences from the Augustinian Academy in Rome, where he also obtained a master's degree in strategic sciences.
Graziano resided in Rome with his wife, Marisa Lanucara, until his untimely passing on June 17, 2024.
