Early Life and Education

Kant was born into a working-class family in Germany. After completing his schooling, he pursued an apprenticeship in auto mechanics from 1949 to 1953.

Naval Service

In 1953, Kant enlisted in the Sea People's Police, the precursor to the GDR's navy. From 1953 to 1955, he studied at the Naval Officer Training School in Stralsund, which later became the "Karl Liebknecht" Naval Academy. In 1955, he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

Career in the Navy

From 1955 to 1956, Kant served as an officer in the Operations Planning Section of the Sea People's Police. Subsequently, he served as an officer for Operational-Tactical Training in the GDR Navy from 1956 to 1958.

In 1958, Kant joined the 4th Flotilla of the Volksmarine. From 1959 to 1961, he studied at the "Karl Liebknecht" Naval Academy.

From 1962 to 1964, Kant served as Chief of Staff of the 4th Border Guard Ship Division in the 6th Coastal Border Brigade. He went on to command the 4th Border Guard Ship Division from 1964 to 1968.

Kant attended the Friedrich Engels Military Academy from 1964 to 1968. After graduating, he resumed command of the 4th Border Guard Ship Division in the 6th Coastal Border Brigade from 1968 to 1969.

From 1969 to 1971, Kant served as First Deputy Commander of the 6th Coastal Border Brigade. He then commanded the 4th Security Brigade (4th Flotilla) from 1971 to 1972.

In 1972, Kant became Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the 4th Flotilla of the Volksmarine, a position he held until 1976. He took command of the 4th Flotilla in 1976 and held the position until 1980.

On October 7, 1979, Kant was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. From 1980 to 1984, he served as Deputy Chief of the Volksmarine's Staff for Organizational Matters.

Leadership at the "Karl Liebknecht" Naval Academy

From 1984 to 1990, Kant served as Commandant of the "Karl Liebknecht" Naval Academy in Stralsund. He was dismissed from service on September 30, 1990.
