Biography of Claudia Antonia
Claudia Antonia was the daughter of Emperor Claudius from his second wife, Aelia Paetina. She was born during the reign of Tiberius, under his nephew Claudius. She was named after his mother, Antonia Minor, and was raised by her until the age of 37 when Antonia Minor passed away. After 37, she resided in the household of Claudius.
Marriages and Controversies
Claudia Antonia was married twice in her lifetime. In 43, she married Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, a descendant of Pompey the Great through the female line. His parents were Mark Antony Crassus Frugi and Scribonia, the daughter of the consul in 16, Scribonius Libo. However, Pompeius was killed around 46, according to the historian Suetonius, while he was in bed with his lover. Dio Cassius claims that the murder was ordered by Messalina, who saw Pompeius as a rival to the imperial power for her son Britannicus. Messalina also planned a second marriage for Antonia, this time to her brother (son of Domitia Lepida from her second husband), Faustus Cornelius Sulla Felix. Antonia and Sulla married in 47 and soon had a child, but unfortunately, the child passed away before reaching the age of two.
Involvement in Political Intrigues
According to Tacitus, in 65, Gaius Calpurnius Piso intended to marry Antonia in order to ally himself with the Julii-Claudii family. This plan was part of his conspiracy against Nero. However, the conspiracy was uncovered, and Calpurnius Piso was executed, and the marriage did not take place. In 66, after the death of Poppaea Sabina the previous year, Nero wanted to marry Antonia. However, she refused, sealing her own fate. She was accused of conspiracy and executed.
