Constantin Duca, Prince of Moldavia

Early Life and Accession

Constantin Duca was born the son of Prince Gheorghe Duca of Moldavia. Upon his father's death, he ascended to the throne as Prince of Moldavia in April 1693.

First Reign (1693-1695)

Duca's primary objective during his first reign was to accumulate wealth to pay off the tribute demanded by the Ottoman Empire. To this end, he implemented several burdensome taxes, including a tobacco tax, a maize tax, and a cattle tax — the heaviest tax ever levied in Moldavia.

Deposition and Restoration

Despite his father-in-law's, Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu of Wallachia, efforts to support him, Duca was deposed by the Ottomans in 1700. However, Brâncoveanu's bribes and gifts persuaded the Ottomans to reappoint Duca in September 1700.

Second Reign (1700-1703)

In his second reign, Duca targeted the supporters of Prince Dimitrie Cantemir. As a result, the Ottomans deposed him once again in July 1703, appointing Ioan Buhuș as caimacam (deputy prince).

Legacy

Constantin Duca's rule was marked by heavy taxation, corruption, and political instability. His reign remains a period of turmoil and hardship in Moldavian history.
