Yuri Mikhailovich Venetsky was born on November 29, 1913, in Moscow, Russia.

In 1942, Venetsky joined the Soviet Army and served on the 1st Ukrainian Front as a front-line cameraman. He attained the rank of Senior Technician-Lieutenant.
