Childhood and Early Life
Goo Kyo-hwan was born on December 14, 1982, in the Songbuk district of Seoul, South Korea. From a young age, he was comfortable in front of the camera due to his father's work in a photo studio.
Education and Career Aspirations
After graduating from Kyungmoon High School, Goo Kyo-hwan pursued a degree in Film Directing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Despite initially considering theater, he chose directing and founded a film studio called Jab Film, where he made short films.
Acting Debut and Early Roles
Goo Kyo-hwan's acting career began through a game of "rock, paper, scissors" among friends. As the loser, he took on his first acting role, which led to predominantly art-house projects and short films. He also engaged with theater performances and maintained a YouTube channel reviewing Asian cinema.
Rise to Prominence
In 2012, Goo Kyo-hwan gained recognition for his role in the romantic film "Werewolf Boy." Five years later, his transformative portrayal of a transgender character in "Jane" earned him a Best New Actor award at the Busan Film Critics Awards. In 2020, he starred in the horror film "Peninsula," which received mixed reviews but elevated his career.
"D.P." and Beyond
Goo Kyo-hwan's breakout role came in the 2021 drama series "D.P.," where he played a South Korean military corporal. He continued to appear in projects such as "The Cursed," "Unusual Attorney Woo," and "Mogadishu Escape," for which he obtained a driver's license to accurately portray his character's escape route.
Personal Life and Activism
Goo Kyo-hwan is in a long-term relationship with filmmaker Lee Ok-seop, whom he met in college. Together, they create short films and share their work on their YouTube channel "2x9HD." The couple is known for their animal activism, supporting environmental protection and donating to animal shelters.
Current Projects
In 2024, Goo Kyo-hwan starred in the Netflix series "Parasyte: The Grey," based on the popular manga. He also has upcoming roles in the sci-fi film "Finding the King" and the action film "Escape."
