Vidor Fischer
Vidor Fischer was a Hungarian-American violist and music educator. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest as a violinist. However, when the New Hungarian Quartet was founded in 1935, he joined as a violist. He remained with the ensemble for all 37 years of its existence.
International Recognition
With the quartet, Fischer moved first to the Netherlands and then to the United States in 1950. Besides performing with the quartet, he occasionally appeared as a soloist with various orchestras. He played on the soundtrack of the 1959 film 'Ben-Hur,' composed by another Hungarian-American, Miklós Rózsa.
Academic Career
From 1962, Fischer taught at the University of Colorado. He went to Oberlin College in 1973 and returned to Boulder in 1980. He remained there until 1996, actively promoting Hungarian musicians from the post-socialist era in the United States. Notably, at his initiative, the Takács Quartet first visited Boulder in 1982 and became resident there in 1986.
