Birth and Early Life

Kostya Levanovich Khetagurov was born on October 15, 1859, in the village of Nar, Russia. His father, Levan, was a respected figure in the community, while his mother passed away when Kostya was only two months old. This loss left an enduring mark on the poet's life and childhood, becoming a recurring theme in his work.

Education and Artistic Development

In 1871, Kostya enrolled in the preparatory class of the Stavropol Classical Gymnasium and was admitted to its boarding school. He spent ten years at the gymnasium, excelling academically. He also developed his artistic abilities, showing a natural talent for painting and literature.

In 1881, Khetagurov received a scholarship from the Kuban region to attend the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He studied there for two years before the scholarship was abruptly terminated. Despite this setback, he continued to attend classes as a volunteer for a further two years.

Return to the Caucasus

From 1881 to 1885, Khetagurov lived and worked in Vladikavkaz. He painted, wrote, and organized literary and musical events. However, he faced censorship and obstruction from the authorities, who viewed his progressive ideas as a threat.

In 1885, Khetagurov was forced into exile for five years due to his activism on behalf of the Ossetian language and culture. He spent this time in the village of Georgyevsko-Osetinskoye.

Literary Career

In 1893, Khetagurov settled in Stavropol and became a regular contributor to the newspaper "Severny Kavkaz." During this period, he wrote extensively on social and political issues, becoming a prominent literary figure in the region.

He also composed several of his most famous works in Ossetian, including the collection of poems "Iron Fandyr" (1899). This work is considered a masterpiece of Ossetian literature and played a pivotal role in the development of the national language and culture.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1899, Khetagurov was once again exiled from the Caucasus. After returning in 1900, he continued to write and engage in public affairs. However, his health was deteriorating, and he died in Vladikavkaz on March 19, 1906.

Kostya Levanovich Khetagurov is regarded as one of the greatest Ossetian poets and writers of all time. His work explored the social and cultural challenges faced by his people, and he tirelessly advocated for their rights and advancement. He left an enduring legacy of literary and artistic achievement that continues to inspire and resonate with Ossetians to this day.
