Krystyu Zlatev: A Distinguished Bulgarian Military Leader

Early Life and Education

Krystyu Zlatev was born in 1864 in Ohrid, Macedonia. In 1884, he graduated from the Military School in Sofia and joined the Bulgarian army.

Military Career

Serbian-Bulgarian War (1885)

During the Serbian-Bulgarian War, Zlatev commanded an infantry battalion and fought in the Battle of Slivnitsa, where he was wounded but continued fighting. His valor earned him the Order of Bravery, Grade IV.

Balkan Wars

In the First Balkan War, Zlatev commanded an infantry regiment in the battles of Chataldzha and Kirklareli. He played a crucial role in capturing a Turkish fort during the Chataldzha operation. During the Second Balkan War, he fought against the Greek army.

World War I

In 1914, Zlatev became commander of an infantry brigade. With Bulgaria's entry into World War I, he was appointed to lead the 11th Infantry Division. On January 1, 1916, he was promoted to Major General.

Post-War Years

After the war, in 1919, Zlatev was promoted to Lieutenant General.
Assassination and Legacy

Krystyu Zlatev was tragically killed during an attack on the Cathedral of Saint Nedelya. His legacy is remembered through a border crossing named in his honor between Bulgaria and Macedonia.
