Early Life and Education

Christopher "Kris" Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. After graduating from San Mateo High School, Kristofferson attended Pomona College in California, where he majored in English literature. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to graduate from Oxford University.

Military Service and Teaching

Following his university education, Kristofferson served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot. After completing his military service, he briefly taught English literature at West Point before moving to Nashville to pursue songwriting.

Musical Career

Kristofferson rose to prominence in the 1970s as a country music singer-songwriter, contributing significantly to the genre's revival. Starting out by playing in army clubs, he achieved mainstream success after winning the Country Music Song of the Year award. In 1973, he married fellow singer-songwriter Rita Coolidge, with whom he released multiple albums before their eventual divorce.

Film Career

Kristofferson made his film debut in Dennis Hopper's "The Last Movie" (1971). Notable performances in his career include "A Star is Born" (1976) with Barbra Streisand and "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974) with Ellen Burstyn. Despite his success in music and film, Kristofferson considers himself primarily a writer.
