Biography of Chris Patten
Chris Patten, born on May 12, 1944, is a British politician and diplomat. He studied history at Oxford University, where he also participated in student theater and wrote reviews on performances.
Political Career
In 1966, Patten joined the Conservative Party and represented its left-wing faction. As a result, journalists gave him the nickname "The Tory with a Human Face."
In 1985, during Margaret Thatcher's premiership, Patten became a member of the government for the first time, serving as the Minister for Education and Science.
From 1992 to 1997, Patten held the position of the 28th and final British Governor of Hong Kong.
After a two-year wait, Patten was appointed as a Commissioner for External Relations of the European Commission.
Candidacy for European Government
Patten is considered one of the key contenders for the position of head of the "European government" after the resignation of Italian Romano Prodi in October. His candidacy is actively supported by Prime Minister Tony Blair, who desires to strengthen London's position within the European Union. Interestingly, the suggestion to appoint Patten to the high-ranking position was first made by former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. However, he advised Patten to improve his French language skills in order to communicate directly with politicians from Paris. Patten has already announced his readiness to enroll in language courses.
Personal Life and Interests
Chris Patten is married and has three daughters. His hobbies include literature, tennis, and gardening.
