Biography of Kris Van Assche

Born on May 12, 1976 in Londerzeel, Belgium, Kris Van Assche studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1994 to 1998. After completing his studies, he moved to Paris, where he quickly secured a position as the first assistant to French designer Hedi Slimane. Slimane had recently joined the fashion house Yves Saint Laurent as the creative director for the menswear line. Their collaboration continued when Slimane moved to Christian Dior in 2000 to work on the Dior Homme collections.

In January 2005, Van Assche presented his own menswear collection for the first time during Paris Men's Fashion Week. This marked the beginning of his career as a fashion designer. Today, he leads his own brand, KRISVANASSCHE, and has been the artistic director for Dior Homme since April 2007.

Van Assche's collections are often minimalist, with a focus on intricate details. His constant color palette consists of various shades of black, gray, blue, or chocolate, evoking the harsh northern light. The designer offers calm elegance through basic wardrobe staples that effortlessly adapt to different lifestyles.

In addition, Van Assche enjoys mixing classical precision with the durability and functionality of workwear or sports-inspired innovations. Despite the apparent rigidity, his style reflects his inspirations, such as the Amish for Dior Homme Summer 2011, North African silhouettes for KRISVANASSCHE Winter 2012-13, or conceptual ideas, as seen in Dior Homme Summer 2011.
