Biography of Kristin Hersh
Early Life and Formation of Throwing MusesAmerican punk singer Kristin Hersh was born on August 7, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia. She spent her childhood in Newport, Rhode Island. At the age of nine, she began learning to play the guitar, with her father as her first teacher. During this time, Kristin started writing songs.
In 1980, Kristin Hersh founded the band "Throwing Muses" with her school friends. Together with her stepsister Tanya Donelly, she became the primary songwriter for the group. In 1986, the band signed a deal with the British record label "4AD Records," and after releasing their debut album, they signed a contract with the American label "Sire/Reprise Records" in 1987. They embarked on tours across the United States and Europe.
Influence and Success of Throwing Muses
As the author of most of their songs, Kristin Hersh acknowledges the influence of various popular bands and artists on her music. Among them are "R.E.M.," "Dead Kennedys," "The Raincoats," Stevie Wonder, "The Beatles," "Talking Heads," Patti Smith, Steve Miller, "Meat Puppets," Robert Johnson, and others. By the late 1980s, Throwing Muses held leading positions within the indie music scene.
Solo Career and Personal Themes
In 1991, Tanya Donelly left the band, and three years later, Kristin Hersh began her solo career. She started performing acoustic concerts, utilizing her voice, guitar, and cello. In 1994, she released the acoustic album "Hips and Makers." The single "Your Ghost," featuring "R.E.M." frontman Michael Stipe, became popular due to Kristin Hersh's heartfelt performance.
Kristin Hersh's songs reflect her personal experiences with family, love, and life. They offer a glimpse into her inner world and can be considered autobiographical. In 1998, she recorded two albums, "Strange Angels" and "Murder, Misery and Then Goodnight," and established her own recording studio called "ThrowingMusic" to have control over the entire recording process. Her husband, Billy O'Connell, served as both her manager and collaborator.
Continued Success and Formation of 50 Foot Wave
In 1999, Kristin Hersh released her fourth solo album, "Sky Motel." Two years later, she released "Live at Noe Valley Ministry" and "Sunny Border Blue," where she played almost all the instruments during the recording. In 2003, she recorded the album "The Grotto" and formed the hardcore punk band "50 Foot Wave" specifically for touring. For the next four years, she didn't release any new music until "Learn to Sing Like a Star" in 2007, where she received assistance from drummer Dave Narcizo and Kim and Martin McCarrick, who handled the string arrangements, while Kristin Hersh played all the other instruments.
