Krzysztof Zborowski: Polish Noble and Adventurer

Early Life and Family

Krzysztof Zborowski was born into Polish nobility, the son of Marcin Zborowski, Castellan of Kraków, and Anna Konarska. He became a Royal Cup-Bearer in 1574-1576.

Exile and Intrigue

In 1574, Krzysztof's brother Samoil was exiled, leading him to flee abroad, primarily to Vienna. He plotted against King Stefan Batory of Poland, negotiating with the Holy Roman Emperor and Tsar Ivan IV of Moscow.

Trial and Condemnation

Following Samoil's execution, Krzysztof was summoned to trial by the Polish Sejm (parliament). In 1585, he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to dishonor and perpetual exile. King Batory requested his extradition from the Holy Roman Emperor, but only secured his banishment from Austrian territories.

Return to Poland

After Batory's death, Zborowski returned to Poland without permission, advocating for Archduke Maximilian at the Sejm. Unsuccessful, he retreated back to Vienna, where he remained even after the Sejm of 1591 pardoned him.
