Early Life and Education
Kurmanbek Saliyevich Bakiyev was born in the village of Masadan, Suzak District, Jalal-Abad Region (now Osh Region), southern Kyrgyzstan, on August 1, 1949. In 1972, he graduated from the Kuibyshev Polytechnic Institute with a degree in "Electronic Computers."
Career Beginnings
From 1972 to 1974, Bakiyev worked as a laborer at the Kuibyshev Fish Plant. From 1979 to 1985, he held the position of senior engineer at the electrical plug factory in Jalal-Abad. In 1985, he became the director of the "Profil" plant in the town of Kok-Jangak.
Political Beginnings
In 1990-1991, Bakiyev served as the first secretary of the Kok-Jangak City Party Committee and chairman of the City Council. From 1991 to 1992, he was deputy chairman of the Jalal-Abad Regional Council of People's Deputies.
Rise Through the Ranks
In 1992-1994, Bakiyev led the Toguz-Toro District Administration. In 1994, he was appointed deputy chairman of the State Property Fund. From 1995 to 1997, he served as deputy and head of the Jalal-Abad Regional Administration. Between 1997 and 2000, he was the governor of the Chui Region.
Prime Minister and Resignation
From December 21, 2000 to May 22, 2002, Bakiyev served as Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan. He resigned on May 22, 2002, following tragic events in the south of the country on March 17-18, 2002, resulting in five deaths and dozens of injuries during mass riots.
Opposition and Presidency
After resigning, Bakiyev led the opposition People's Movement of Kyrgyzstan (NDK) from 2004 onwards. In August 2005, he was elected President of Kyrgyzstan.
