Early Life and Career

Loder attended school until 1963 and spent two years in college, which he disliked. He joined the American army and found himself in journalism, despite having no prior experience in the field. In late 1972, he returned to New Jersey and started working for a local newspaper and magazine.

In the summer of 1976, Loder joined the free rock weekly 'Good Times,' where he immersed himself in the punk rock scene and met influential people, including David Fricke. In 1978, they both joined the creative team at 'Circus' magazine and moved to Manhattan. Loder eventually became one of the official editors of the magazine, known for its fun and enjoyable work environment.

Rolling Stone and MTV

In May 1979, Loder began a nine-year collaboration with 'Rolling Stone' magazine. During this time, he earned a reputation as one of the most talented and prolific writers for the publication. He also co-authored Tina Turner's autobiography, 'I, Tina,' which was released in 1986 and later adapted into the biopic 'What's Love Got to Do with It' in 1993.

In 1987, Loder joined MTV as the host of the main music news program, 'The Week in Rock,' and later became a host and correspondent for 'MTV News.' He was one of the first to report on the death of Kurt Cobain, interrupting regular broadcasting to deliver the news. Loder made guest appearances as himself on various television shows and movies, including 'Kenan & Kel,' 'The Simpsons,' and 'Saturday Night Live.'

Current Life and Beliefs

Currently residing in New York City, Loder released a collection of his movie reviews titled 'The Good, the Bad and the Godawful: 21st-Century Movie Reviews' in 2001. He is a libertarian and expresses his political beliefs with the phrase "Free love and free market." Loder has been critical of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, referring to him as a "scary guy," and opposed President George H. W. Bush during the 1992 presidential elections.

Loder believes that MTV News played a significant role, albeit small, in Bush's defeat in the elections. He defines news as "everything interesting" and criticizes the concept of "new journalism," considering it a rhetorical shield for lazy journalists. Loder also supports copyright laws and believes that new technologies have drastically changed American culture, making it impossible for any project, whether in music or film, to achieve the same success as the great rock bands of the past, let alone 'The Beatles.'
