Kushal Pal Singh, an Indian business magnate, is the chairman and CEO of DLF Limited, the largest construction company in India. DLF Limited is a land bank with 42 square kilometers of land, out of which 12 square kilometers are located in Gurgaon, known as DLF City. Singh ranked 130th on Forbes' list of the world's richest people in 2011, with a personal fortune estimated at $7.3 billion.
Early Life and Career
Kushal Pal Singh was born on November 15, 1931, in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, India. He comes from a family of landlords, with his father being a renowned lawyer in Bulandshahar. After completing his education at Meerut College, Singh went to the United Kingdom to pursue a career in aviation engineering. He later served in the Indian Army as a representative of the cavalry regiment, The Deccan Horse.
In 1960, Singh joined American Universal Electric Company, and after its merger with DLF Universal Limited in 1979, he became the managing director of the newly formed company. Singh played a crucial role in transforming DLF Limited into the largest real estate company in India, with a strong presence in the global real estate market, impressive revenue figures, market capitalization, and extensive land holdings suitable for development. He turned Gurgaon into a renowned outsourcing hub, attracting external organizations interested in earthquake-resistant office buildings, world-class apartments, shopping centers, and entertainment facilities. Gurgaon is also known for its numerous call centers and shopping malls.
DLF Group and Success
Under Singh's leadership, DLF Limited went public in 2007. Shortly after offering shares to investors, the company's market value skyrocketed to $24.5 billion. As a result, Singh and his family became the wealthiest family in the world at that time. In addition, in 2008, Singh was briefly the richest real estate tycoon in the world.
Singh is married to Indira Singh, and they have a son named Rajiv Singh and two daughters, Renuka Talwar and Pia Singh. All family members, including grandchildren, are currently involved in some capacity with DLF Limited.
Legacy and Awards
Rajiv Singh serves as the vice chairman of the DLF Group, while his wife, Kavita, has been an advisor to the company's commercial department since November 2002. She also became an advisor to DLF Universal Ltd on June 1, 2011. Rajiv and Kavita have two daughters, Savitri and Anushka. Savitri was appointed as the business head of DLF Commercial Developers Ltd at the company's annual general meeting on September 28, 2010, while Anushka became the CEO of DLF Home Developers Ltd.
Singh's eldest daughter, Renuka, is married to G.S. Talwar, an independent director of DLF Ltd. Their son, Rahul, joined DLF India Ltd as a senior management trainee. Singh's youngest daughter, Pia, serves as one of the directors of DLF Limited.
In 2011, Singh was honored as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" at The Asian Awards ceremony, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the business world.
