Biography of Francis Yeoh
Francis Yeoh Sock Ping was born on August 23, 1954. He is the eldest son of Malaysian billionaire Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay. Yeoh received his education at Victoria Institution, one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur. During his years of study, he served as the school captain. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Civil Engineering from Kingston Polytechnic, now known as Kingston University in the UK.
Business Success
Yeoh was appointed as the Managing Director of the YTL Corporation in 1988. Under his leadership, the company grew from a single listed company in 1985 to a group of five listed companies. Today, YTL Corporation is one of the largest conglomerates in Malaysia. Yeoh attributes his success in business to his strong faith as a devout Christian.
Recognition and Awards
In recognition of his business acumen, Yeoh became the first Malaysian to receive the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award on January 16, 2003. He was also named the "Young Entrepreneur of the Year." On November 6, 2003, he was honored as one of the "25 Stars of Asia" by Business Week in Hong Kong. Yeoh was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by his alma mater, Kingston University, on February 13, 2004. Finally, on August 9, 2004, he was ranked 21st on Fortune magazine's list of the "25 Most Powerful Businesspeople in Asia."
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Yeoh married Rosaline Yeoh in 1982, and the couple had five children. Sadly, his wife passed away on August 5, 2006. In the same year, Yeoh received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his philanthropic activities.
