Early Life and Arrival in Singapore

Born in Tung Ann, Fujian, China, Kwek Hong Png arrived in Singapore in 1928 as a poor immigrant. He found employment as an assistant at his uncle's store, earning only $5 per month and reportedly sleeping on the shop's staircase due to lack of accommodation.

Rise to Prosperity

During World War II, Kwek amassed wealth by trading building materials, smuggling essential goods, and establishing business connections with Japanese traders. In 1941, he founded Hong Leong Group as a trading company specializing in construction materials and rubber products.

The Hong Leong Group and Chairmanship

Seeking collaboration, Kwek brought his three brothers into the business. He became the conglomerate's Chairman in 1956 and held the position until 1984. Under his leadership, Hong Leong Group expanded significantly.

Legal Troubles

In November 1989, Kwek was charged with misappropriation of funds and abetment of criminal breach of trust. He was found guilty by Justice Govinda Pannirselvam in the "Stolen Properties Case." Kwek was released on bail of $1 million and had his passport impounded.

Death and Legacy

Kwek died at the age of 83 in 1994. CNN Asia correspondent Louis Kraar described him as "a master developer of Singapore." His business empire passed to his son, Kwek Leng Beng. A gallery at the Ancient Civilisations Museum showcasing Chinese artifacts is named in Kwek Hong Png's honor.
