Early Life and Education

Juan Roig was born on a farm in Poble Nou, Spain. His father was a pig farmer, and Juan, along with his brothers, had to participate in various farm activities, including loading and repairing work. Roig attended a Jesuit school, where his teachers believed he would not achieve much in life. Later, he moved to a Franciscan school, where he was encouraged to work hard to achieve his ambitions.

Entrepreneurial Journey

Although Roig's father wanted him to pursue a career in agronomy, Juan was more interested in economics and entrepreneurship. During his economics studies, Roig met Hortensia Herrero, with whom he eventually married and had four daughters. Roig's entrepreneurial abilities may have been inherited from his father and grandfather, who were also involved in trade.

In the early 1980s, Roig's family business, Cárnicas Roig, faced financial difficulties and eventually had to be liquidated. In 1977, Roig senior founded Mercadona, and Juan took over as the head of the company in 1981. Within ten years, Mercadona expanded beyond Valencia, and Roig involved his brothers and his sister-in-law, Marilyn, in the family business. Despite some disagreements with his brother Paco, Roig managed to achieve remarkable success with Mercadona.

Success and Values

Under Roig's leadership, Mercadona continued to grow rapidly, contributing billions to Spain's GDP and creating thousands of jobs. Although the company could have expanded internationally, Roig decided to focus on helping Spain recover from the financial crisis.

Despite his incredible success, Juan Roig is not a traditional ambitious businessman. He values his independence above all else and prefers to be in full control of his company. Roig's commitment to independence has been a driving force behind Mercadona's growth.

In conclusion, Juan Roig's journey from a farm in Poble Nou to becoming the president of Mercadona showcases his determination and entrepreneurial spirit. His success is a testament to his hard work, independence, and dedication to his company and country.
