A Passion for Baking: The Story of Kyla Daniels
Humble BeginningsFrom humble beginnings as a self-taught baker, Kyla Daniels has transformed her passion for creating delectable cakes into a thriving business. Starting as a mom of three, she baked cakes "just for fun" until friends and family encouraged her to share her creations with the world.
A Flourishing Business
In January 2017, Daniels opened her first cafe in Wyong, NSW. The cafe quickly gained popularity, selling out up to 400 cupcakes daily at four dollars apiece. The success of the cafe led to the opening of a second location in Gosford in February 2017, where customers lined up around the block for a taste of Kyla's highly sought-after cupcakes.
From Home Kitchen to Culinary School
Today, Daniels operates a team of bakers in Wyong, crafting custom cakes for clients and catering for weddings, corporate events, and even divorce parties. She also imparts her knowledge as an instructor at Julie Goodwin's Cooking School and conducts her own cake decorating classes at Cake and Plate in Narara.
A Family Affair
As the mother of three, Daniels' inspiration often comes from her sons' allergies. She creates cakes inspired by cartoons and comic books, including characters from "Moana," "Star Wars," and "Lego." Her diverse flavors include everything from strawberry and lemon to Ferraro Rocher and her beloved Cherry Ripe chocolate bar.
Balancing Act
Daniels' passion extends beyond baking to teaching. Yet, finding a balance between her classes and her business remains a challenge. "I've missed footy games and things with my boys," she says. "So, it's finding a happy medium for them and the business."
A Global Reach
Kyla's cakes have spread far and wide, reaching as far north as Queensland and as far south as Wollongong and Bathurst. "Our tallest wedding cake went to Cambodia and it was also for my friends' wedding," says Daniels.
Handmade and From Scratch
Together with her husband, Shaun, and a dedicated team of bakers, Kyla creates each masterpiece by hand from scratch. "We make our own buttercream, fillings, and all that time-consuming stuff," Daniels says.
A Community of Support
Despite occasional criticism, Daniels' business continues to thrive, boasting over 21,000 social media followers and a supportive network of fellow small businesses. The story of Kyla Daniels is a testament to the transformative power of passion, hard work, and community support.
