Early Life and Education

Claude Everett Robinson (1900-1961) was born in Portland, Oregon, into a teacher's family. At a young age, he began selling newspapers, eventually dropping out of school to join the army during World War I. After the war, he returned to Portland, completed high school, and enrolled at the University of Oregon, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1924, Robinson moved to New York City to pursue a master's and doctorate in sociology at Columbia University. His doctoral dissertation analyzed the history and technology of straw polls, a study that was later published as a book.

Career in Public Opinion Research

In the early 1930s, Robinson collaborated with George Gallup on the establishment of the American Institute of Public Opinion (AIPO). Robinson contributed his expertise in polling methodology to Gallup's pioneering work in public opinion research.

In 1938, Robinson founded Opinion Research Corporation (ORC), applying polling technology to market research and consumer behavior. ORC became a leading player in the emerging field, conducting studies for major corporations like Standard Oil and General Motors.

Gallup & Robinson, Inc.

In 1948, Robinson co-founded Gallup & Robinson, Inc. with Gallup. This partnership focused on the effectiveness of advertising campaigns, helping organizations optimize their marketing strategies.

Economic Education

Robinson's involvement in business and economics extended beyond polling. He was an advocate for classical liberal economic principles. In the postwar era, he played a role in the establishment of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), an organization promoting free market capitalism.

Personal Qualities

Robinson's obituary in "Public Opinion Quarterly" described him as a "Renaissance man" who combined intellectual brilliance with practical business acumen. He was known for his leadership, civic-mindedness, and personal charm.
