Last Video Contemplating Mortality

In a haunting video posted just hours before her fatal car crash, American country singer Kalie Rae Harris reflected on death. The 30-year-old artist died in a three-vehicle accident in New Mexico.

Harris was driving to a scheduled performance at a music festival when she decided to record a series of videos, sharing personal memories of her family and the losses she had experienced. Her voice trembling with emotion, Harris reminisced about visiting relatives in the area in the past. "Literally everybody that lived here is dead except for my uncle," she said. "And my dad's not alive anymore. I'm going to cry now."

"I've been driving for like 12 hours and you would think it would just be so tiring and so boring," she continued. "But I've been driving through these mountains the last couple of hours and I've been remembering being in the back of my dad's truck when I was a little kid and like him driving through these mountains. It's pretty cool."

A History of Loss and Inspiration

Unbeknownst to Harris, she was driving on the same roads that would ultimately claim her life. The country singer also shared that seeing cows throughout her drive had reminded her of a time when she and her late father had been in an accident because of a loose animal.

"I know this is really depressing," Harris said in an assessment of her video. "But, it started when I was going through the mountains and I started crying and getting sad. And then out of nowhere, those cows came out. We all grieve differently. So, yeah."

Tragic Accident and Legacy

Four hours later, the Dallas native and another driver, an unidentified 16-year-old girl, were killed in the crash on State Road 522. The third driver reportedly escaped uninjured. Authorities suspect alcohol may have played a role in the tragedy.

In March of the same year, Harris released her final EP. She dedicated the song "Twenty Years From Now" to her six-year-old daughter, Corbie. Speaking to Billboard magazine, Harris explained her inspiration for the track:

"It scared the hell out of me to think that I could be gone before my daughter is grown," she said. "I want to meet my kid's kids. There's so much that opens up when you reach a point in your life where you're the age your parents were when you were a kid."

Music Rooted in Heartbreak

In a March 2019 interview with The Dallas Observer, Harris discussed recording her EP at Nashville's Farmland Studio with Jon Randall, who had previously collaborated with Miranda Lambert.

Harris asserted that "a broken heart" remained an essential ingredient in country music for good reason. "Country music is supposed to be real," she said. "I think everyone's been in that relationship where they know it's tearing them apart but they go back to it anyway."

"It's a dysfunctional cycle that's hard to break, and unfortunately, those are the songs that resonate the most."

Harris added that she could only sing about experiences she had lived herself. "Some people keep a diary to process things, but I write songs," she told The Dallas Observer.
