Early Life and Career

Laila Kinnunen was born on November 8, 1939, in Vantaa, a suburb of Helsinki, Finland. Shortly after the outbreak of the Winter War, her family was evacuated to Sweden, where she spent her early childhood. She returned to Finland in 1949 at the age of 10.

In 1955, Kinnunen won a singing competition in Helsinki and became a soloist with Lasse Pihlajamaa's orchestra from 1955 to 1956. She subsequently sang with the orchestras of Olli Häme and Erkki Melakoski. Her first hit record, "Lazzarella," was released in 1957.

Eurovision and International Fame

In 1961, Kinnunen represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest in Cannes with the song "Valoa ikkunassa" ("Light in the Window"), finishing in tenth place. This performance brought her recognition not only in Finland but also throughout Europe. She participated in the Finnish national selection for Eurovision again in 1962 ("Lumineito"), 1966 ("Muistojen bulevardi"), 1967 ("Unohdusta ei ole"), and 1969 ("Potkis").

Success and Diversification

In the 1960s, Kinnunen's repertoire expanded to include bossa nova, jazz, romances, and Finnish folk songs. Some of her most famous recordings from this period include "Soittajapoika," "Mandshurian kummut," "Tiet," "Yön äänet," "Epävireiset sydämet," "Yhden nuotin samba," "Ipaneman tyttö," "Kun," and "En vastaa jos soitat." In 1962, she also recorded several songs in duet with her sister, Ritva Kinnunen, including "Pojat" and "Lauantai."

Diversity in the Arts

In addition to her singing career, Kinnunen performed in the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki, appeared in films such as "Big Parade of Melodies," and participated in television programs.

Later Life and Retirement

Kinnunen's musical output declined in the late 1960s, and in the early 1970s her contract with Scandia Records was terminated. She made a few more recordings after this but retired from performing completely in the early 1980s. In 1989, a documentary film about her life and career, "Laila," was released.

Personal Life and Legacy

Kinnunen was married twice, first to actor Ville-Veikko Saminen and then to Yugoslavian musician Miso Misic. She had one daughter, Milana Misic, who also became a singer. Kinnunen passed away in 2000 and was laid to rest in the Malmi Cemetery in Helsinki.
