Bishop, Later Prince of Capua

Lando II, also known as Landolfo, was a notable figure in the history of Southern Italy during the 9th century. Born as the youngest son of Landolfo I, Count of Capua, Lando initially embarked on an ecclesiastical career and became Bishop of Capua.

Ascension to the Throne of Capua

Upon the death of his elder brother, Pandone, Lando II seized power in Capua. Despite being a bishop, he became Prince of Capua (as Landolfo IV) in 843, marking the beginning of a dual rule as both spiritual and secular leader.

Reign and Alliances

During his reign, Lando II faced challenges from both the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. In 866, he was besieged by Emperor Louis II and forced to acknowledge his authority as a vassal. However, Lando II later allied himself with the Arabs until Pope John VIII persuaded him to break this alliance in 877.

Succession and Civil War

Lando II's death in 879 sparked a civil war in Capua. His nephews, Pandone and Landone III, contended for the княжеский престол, while his son, Landenolfo, and brother, Landolfo, competed for the office of Bishop of Capua.
