Saint Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo
Early Life and EducationGiuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo was born in 1786 in the town of Bra, Italy. In 1802, he enrolled in the seminary in Asti, but his studies were interrupted when Napoleon I closed the seminary. Despite this setback, Cottolengo continued his theological studies in secret.
Ordination and Pastoral Work
In 1811, Cottolengo was ordained to the priesthood. Inspired by the work of Saint Vincent de Paul, he established numerous charitable organizations, societies of priests, and volunteers dedicated to serving the sick and the poor.
Foundation of the Little House of Divine Providence
In 1828, Cottolengo founded his first asylum, the Little House of Divine Providence. This institution provided shelter and care for the abandoned, sick, and elderly.
Establishment of Religious Congregations
Cottolengo also established three religious Catholic congregations:- Sisters of Saint Joseph(SSGC): A congregation of women dedicated to providing healthcare and education to the poor.
- Congregation of Little Brothers of Divine Providence(CFP): A congregation of men who served as chaplains and administrators in the Little House of Divine Providence.
- Institute of the Daughters of the Little House of Divine Providence(FIH): A congregation of women dedicated to the care of the sick and elderly.
Canonization and Legacy
In 1917, Pope Benedict XV beatified Cottolengo. In 1934, Pope Pius XI canonized him as a saint. His feast day is celebrated in the Catholic Church on April 30th.
Cottolengo's legacy lives on through the charitable and social work of the religious congregations he founded. His life of service and dedication continues to inspire countless others.
