Alligator Tragedy at Walt Disney World
On June 14, 2016, tragedy struck Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, when a two-year-old boy named Lane Graves was snatched by an alligator and drowned.

Incident Details
The incident occurred at the Seven Seas Lagoon, an artificial lake located near the Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Lane and his parents were swimming in the shallow water when the alligator emerged and attacked. Despite his father's desperate attempts to save him, Lane was dragged underwater and killed.
Search and Rescue
A massive search and rescue operation was launched immediately and lasted for over 15 hours. Sonar, spotlights, and infrared cameras were used to locate the boy's body, which was eventually found intact 17 hours later.
Investigation and Criticism
Disney World faced criticism for its warning signs, which some argued were unclear about the presence of alligators in the area. However, the Orange County Sheriff's Office stated that it was unlikely the parents could be charged with neglect.
Alligator Population
Alligators are common in Walt Disney World, as the resort is located in the middle of the Florida swamps. Disney officials confirmed that the alligator likely drowned Lane and released his body on the lagoon floor.
Family Statement
Lane's family released a statement expressing their devastation but also finding some solace in the fact that his body was found intact. Disney CEO Bob Iger also reached out to the family to offer condolences.
Previous Incidents
The alligator attack was not the first of its kind at Walt Disney World. In 1986, an eight-year-old boy named Paul Santamaria was bitten by an alligator at Fort Wilderness Lodge. He survived with minor injuries.
Alligator Behavior
Alligators are generally considered to be shy creatures, but they can become aggressive if provoked. Attacks on humans are rare, but they do occur. In Florida, there have been 41 unprovoked alligator attacks since 2010.
